Lesser Short-toed Lark - Calandrella rufescens

Lesser Short-toed Lark

This species has as limited a range in Portugal as any species regularly present in the country. It is almost exclusively restricted in very small numbers to the Castro Marim nature reserve and adjoining saltmarsh. Unlike the Greater Short-toed Lark, it is a resident species dispersing in winter only very short distances from its breeding sites. Its streaked breast is the most obvious distinction from Greater Short-toed Lark, although immatures of the latter are streaked as well and complicate identification.
