In winter, Eurasian Spoonbills from Northern Europe take up residence in the shallow lakes, coastal lagoons and salt pans of the Algarve. Good places to see them include the nature reserve at Castro Marim, the salt pans around Tavira and Ludo, near Faro, and at Quinta do Marim, the Headquarters of the Ria Formosa reserve, where there is a breeding colony. The specimens shown on this page were photographed at Castro Marim and near Faro.
