This is a very varied order of insects. Some species live on the surface; others are mainly found near the bed of a lake or stream or among submerged vegetation.
Other insects in this group include the Greater Waterboatman (Notonecta species), the water measurer (Hydrometra species), stick insects (Ranatra species) and the Common Water Bug, Aphelocheirus montandoni - all of which are featured, with colour photographs, in the book Matching the Hatch.
